Hi
My friends recommended that I get the Meerkat viewer for Second Life, so I downloaded the free version. I can't get past the window for the SSH set up, there is nothing to choose in the server drop down window. I'm a average skill level Mac user, so basic instructions would be quite helpful.

thanks in advance!

Hi Koni. I think you've got

Hi Koni. I think you've got the wrong program. Meerkat here is an SSH tunneling program, sort of like a VPN application. The Second Life application is not affiliated with this site or hosted here.

I think you want this: http://www.meerkatviewer.org/

That said, the Meerkat here would be useful for you if you'd like to listen to your iTunes library located on a home computer while away from home ;-)

Same Problem

I'm experiencing the same problem as Koni. I can't get by the Account Setup screen. The server list is blank with no options. I want to create a connection to my home Mac to stream itunes and move files around.

Advise would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

James

Also new to this

I also want to learn how to tunnel with ssh. I am on the road 4 days a week and want to be able to access my home computer for itunes content and to transfer files. Please help with this set up with some kind of beginners' tutorial. Thanks in advance.

Hi Gary, Here is a sample

Hi Gary,

Here is a sample iTunes setup with Meerkat:

1) Turn on "Remote Login" (i.e., SSH) on your home Mac. This is in the Sharing preferences.

2) Create a new account in Meerkat with the IP address, username, and password of your home computer. You can find out your external home IP by going to a site such as http://whatismyip.com. This may also require you configure your router for outside access over SSH.

3) Create a tunnel in Meerkat using the account created above. You would configure it for "I want to reach localhost", port 3306, available at This Mac, and some port (say, 33306). This is basically using the tunnel to look at the tunnel's local host on port 3306 (iTunes' port) and making it available on your Mac at 33306.

4) Edit the advanced options of the tunnel and turn on the last two checkboxes, advertising over Bonjour as iTunes.

iTunes should see your home music after this.

I realize this is a little lengthy. Right now, Meerkat is less about helping you understand SSH tunnels and more about making it easier to set them up and keep them going across environment changes. In the future, I hope to make Meerkat a little more intuitive in this regard.
