Hi,

I am trying to setup a tunnel to my home Mac Mini from my MacBook that relays a connection to Gmail's IMAP server on port 993.

I only want to activate the tunnel on my MacBook while I am at the office (where the firewall blocks outbound connections to port 993).

I was able to successfully setup a tunnel to my home Mac Mini for Screen Sharing (port 5900) but when I try to set it up for Gmail, the Meerkat Wizard tells me that ports below 1024 are not allowed.

How can I setup a tunnel for Gmail without having to change the settings in Mail.app whenever I switch between home and the office?

As I see it, there is only

As I see it, there is only one way this could work while involving Meerkat and an SSH tunnel.

1) You would have to always use a tunnel, both at the office and elsewhere. It would have a local endpoint above 1024.

2) Your home Mac mini would have to be reachable by a DNS name that points to home when away from home and to the local IP when at home. This would probably best be accomplished in your home router's config.

Does that make sense? I don't think there's another way to do it until such time as Meerkat supports privileged ports below 1024.
