"Cache updated" Growl notification

I'm just getting started with Pukka as part of an effort to get my bookmarks organized and accessible. I'm enjoying it so far, but want to mention one nit. I get what would appear to be a superfluous "cache updated' Growl notification each time I add something to Pukka. Could someone clarify what that message is actually telling me, and why I'd want to know?

While I'm here, might I also suggest that the Esc key close the Pukka dialog rather than resetting it? For me, at least, it's a lot more common to want to close the box than to empty it out.

Thanks!

Hi there. You bring up some

Hi there. You bring up some good points.

Regarding the Growl notification, that was put in as a way to notify the user mainly in the case that you might be adding or changing bookmarks from outside of Pukka and wondering when those changes will be reflected in Pukka itself. I've never had anyone point out before that it might be a bother, but the good news is that you can change your Growl preferences to not show that notification in particular. If you go into Growl in System Preferences, then Applications, then find Pukka, there are three notification types there -- posting, caching, and Bonjour. Just turn off or otherwise configure caching notifications and you should be all set.

Regarding the Esc key, I'm afraid that might be another case where a custom configuration might work better, as I haven't heard of it being a problem for other users. If you go into Keyboard & Mouse in System Preferences, you should be able to configure the menu item for Close to respond to the Esc key, overriding its default behavior. Two other options that exist are to use Command-W like other apps or to make sure that Hide After Submitting a Post is set in Pukka's preferences. This will automatically put the app out of view after posting, saving you the trouble.

Hope this helps and thanks for using Pukka!

How often does Pukka update?

How often does Pukka update? Since Pukka 1.8, 50% of the time I use bookmark search in the menu bar, recently added bookmarks are not yet there. "Recently" means that bookmarks added as far back as 3 days ago are sometimes not returned by the search. This unpredictable lag in synchronizing with Delicous is discouraging. At other times Pukka seems to be updating its cache repeatedly within minutes.

Could you explain how the update process works or how I may cause Pukka to synchronize with Delicous?

Pukka should be checking for

Pukka should be checking for updates at Delicious on the order of every minute or so. If that indicates that there are any new bookmarks, then, depending on how long ago the last full cache was, either all bookmarks will be pulled down or just the most recent ones will be. This decision is made to avoid getting banned by Delicious, something that was happening rather frequently in the past.

Two ways to force a check are to open and close the preferences (as you would when adding or removing an account) and to restart the application.

If you open Window > Console in Pukka, it should tell you when it is caching bookmarks. If you see that happening relatively recently and still aren't seeing the bookmarks in search, then there may indeed be a deeper problem.

If, as you say, Pukka checks

If, as you say, Pukka checks for updates every minute or so, shouldn't the Console contain a new line every minute or so? Or does the console display information only in the event that some action follows after checking?

The last activity was 29 hours ago. Does this mean that the last check for updates was 29 hours ago?

For the check that happens

For the check that happens every minute, only errors are reported. Other actions, such as backing up bookmarks or saving cached bookmarks, are always reported.

I am having the same problem.

I am having the same problem. The only time my local bookmark cache seems to update is when Pukka first loads. I can add new bookmarks, search for them 10 minutes later, and Pukka does not find them unless I restart, then search again.

Due to these issues, as well

Due to these issues, as well as the plans to soon drop Tiger support and take advantage of Leopard-and-better technologies, I will be rewriting the downloading and caching code in the near future to be faster, more reliable, and more easily user-initiated.
