Remove new menubar icon

The new Pukka menubar icon is pretty handy for searching bookmarks, but I'm very anal about what I allow in menubar and don't need another icon there. Unfortunately, I can't find an option in prefs to hide the menubar icon. I see several options under "Appearance" to change the Dock icon, but nothing for the menubar. Is there a way to remove the icon from the menubar?

HI Lawen,

Previously, when Pukka mirrored the dock menu contents in the menu bar, there was an option to turn this off. But with search, since the only way to reach the feature is to have it in the menu bar, I decided to remove the option.

A couple questions:

1) Do you plan on using the search?

2) Do you keep Pukka running in the background? Because if you'd rather not, there is an option to quit immediately after posting a link.

Thanks and let me know so I can get an idea of what would be most useful.

I wasn't the original poster, but my 2c:

1) I don't plan on using the search, as I'm already really accustomed to using Quicksilver to search del.icio.us.

2) I leave Pukka running all the time, and am not a fan of non-optional menubar entries (as I have a rather small screen which is already crowded).

Hi Justin, Thanks for the

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the quick response. Historically, I've left Pukka running in the background with "Hide After Submitting a Post" and "Hide application when in background" checked in prefs. So I'd just invoke Pukka with the bookmarklet, type my tags, hit Enter, and have Pukka disappear until the next time I invoked it.

Generally when I want to find a page I've previously bookmarked I just go to delicious.com and search my bookmarks there. I use delicious as a repository for links that I may at some point like to find again rather than as a means of archiving links that I visit often. So I'd be pretty happy with a way to just disable search altogether if it allowed me to hide the menubar icon (best of both worlds would be keeping the search functionality on the dock icon but with no menubar icon; it sounds like that isn't feasible though).

I'll try just having Pukka quit after posting a bookmark. The reason I haven't done that in the past though is that I have 2 accounts set up in Pukka (a "regular" account and a food/recipe-only "cookbook" account) and the cookbook account comes up by default when Pukka is launched, so I have to change to my "regular" account each time. "Quit after posting" would perhaps make a better stopgap if the accounts could be reordered?

@Lawen, @sean: Thanks for your feedback.

Sounds like both of you could do without search for the most part. I don't think I will try to put it into the Dock menu -- there are already enough folks who are anxious for me to make Pukka's Dock icon optional, just like Meerkat's, as it is! :-)

I understand the Quicksilver approach -- I used to use LaunchBar as it was, albeit just for tag pages, not for searching bookmarks themselves.

I use delicious as a repository for links that I may at some point like to find again rather than as a means of archiving links that I visit often.

I'm generally the same way, except for a few tags like @toread and reference. I have a couple thousand bookmarks that, for the most part, I don't touch.

Quit after posting" would perhaps make a better stopgap if the accounts could be reordered?

I did add this as well in 1.8 :-)

Sounds like maybe a good approach would be to allow disable of the menu bar item, which in turn just disables search. I will put some thought into this after the release is out a bit, and in the meantime, I apologize for any inconvenience with the extra menu bar space.

Ah-ha! So you did! That's extremely helpful and makes "Close after successful post" work just fine as a stop gap. I would like to see a "Disable Search & Menubar icon" option at some point, but can definitely survive until you add it in a future revision. Thanks again for the quick response.

Sounds good to me, and no need to apologize, it's not a high crime. :)

Yeah, don’t need another menubar icon

But I love the search feature? I really wish I could just invoke the search menu with a keyboard shortcut and not have the icon there. How does Yojimbo accomplish that?

Another coolio would be to have a keyboard shortcut bring up a lovely HUD bezel at the ready for my search.

Still, thank you for excellent work on Pukka!

Thanks for the feedback. It

Thanks for the feedback. It is pretty easily technically possible to just have the search bar floating -- for instance, I could have made it show up in the center of the screen. But I thought it best to tie it to the menu bar and get rid of an increasingly cumbersome flat menu there.

RE: the keyboard shortcut, you do know that you can assign a global hot key for search, right? Or do you just mean doing this in a HUD instead of the current menu bar?

RE: global hotkey

Yessir, I have my hotkey and love it. Just wish I had it sans the menubar icon (a la Yojimbo).

Thanks :)
