Meerkat

Discuss Meerkat, our easy-to-use SSH tunnel manager.

When using a keyboard shortcut to initiate an SSH session...

Posted in

Hello,

It would be very nice to add an option allowing to open new SSH sessions into existing terminal windows (E.g. by creating a new tab and switching to it).

The thing is that my Terminal preferences have a custom window size which is not applied when using the keyboard shortcut in Meerkat, and it can be very annoying to resize N windows.

Thanks,
Pierre.

Zeroconf services features.

Posted in

Hello,

i'm trying Meerkat, and i believe some functionality lacks for the Zeroconf custom services manager.

When creating a ZeroConf service, it would be good to be able to assign it a name (Else, the tunnel name appears in the finder list for services such as AFP or VNC, and it is not always relevant).

Ultimately, this option should be definable in the account pane if my previous feature suggestion (Tunnel assignable to multiple account) is retained, with for instance some kind of tags for the name of the tunnel (Example: Use %C for customer name, %T for tunnel name, etc, so the text box for naming the Zeroconf service would offer to type "Tunnelled %C", which would then appear in the finder as "Tunnelled AccountName").

This would make possible to have multiple Zeroconf broadcasts with the same name, very useful for having things "grouped" in the finder (For instance, if i create an AFP tunnel and a VNC tunnel to the same customer account, i would like the Zeroconf entry to appear as a unique one in the finder, exactly as it behaves for real local machines, and when clicking it, the buttons on the top right of the finder would show "Share Screen" AND "Connect As...").

Am i clear enough? :)

Thanks,
Pierre.

Tunnels hierarchy mess.

Posted in

Hello,

Again, this is only my 2nd post, i'm very new to Meerkat.
i use SSH tunnels from command line on a hourly basis, in all our customer sites.
The problem i see with Meercat is that each tunnel is "bound" to one SSH account... Which is very unfortunate when you kinda setup the same tunnels at every customer. Let me explain what i would like to see.

- The Accounts window is fine.
- The Tunnels window should show a checkbox list of accounts for which the tunnels would be made available (In your Core Data file, just replace the to-one by a to-many relationship).
- This way, when clicking the MeerKat menu item, the application could show a hierarchical list of accounts > tunnels instead of listing all tunnels.

i'm not sure i'm explaining myself correctly... But i really think this setup can make the difference for pro-customers, as they would require to often tunnel the same ports for various customers, so the need to re-create each tunnels N times (N being the number of customers) would disappear.

Additionally and if this feature is retained, i would say that a tunnel would also be bindable to NO account, so it could appear on the menu top-level of the hierarchy, and when one clicks this tunnel, a dialog asks on which account to start it.

Or something like that :)

Best to you,
Pierre.

ports under 1024

Are ports under 1024 ever going to be supported?

If not, do you know of a simple 'how to' so I can make them myself? (I've only ever made tunnels using Meerkat)

Meerkat's future

Posted in

Hi,

This is the first time I post here, and I hope the contents of my post will convey all the good intentions I have when writing it.
I'll start off with a confession: I've tried the evaluation version of Meerkat twice. The first time I tried Meerkat about a year ago, on my macbook; recently I've tried it again on my air.
Before this and in the mean time, I've kept track of Meerkat and alternative options. Short and sweet: Meerkat is the only app that does what I need, and is close to perfect in that.

My issue - and again, this is meant in a constructive way - is that Meerkat has not been updated for quite some time now (over a year). This means that there are some bugs (such as the issues with Lion, now), and there is no progress in terms of features. That worries me, and is keeping me from buying a license.

After my second trial, I'm in my doubting-phase again - and I know there's a number of people in my vicinity that feel the same. I like the software, and - after/if the (Lion) bugs get sorted - it will probably work. But I'd like to see some progress in terms of features as well.
An active, well-maintained, evolving piece of software sells better, and is better for the users as well.

So my question: What are your plans with Meerkat's future? Do you have any planned new features, (Lion and other) fixes, or other kind of roadmap? I think the software is great, and can become even better - and it deserves to :)

Meerkat fails after upgrade to 10.6?

Posted in

So I'm the last person to do it, but I recently upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6, and since then, Meerkat has been acting a bit strangely. I'm on MeerKat 1.5, and I am using it as a socks proxy for all of my web traffic.

The problem is that Meerkat, while not losing its connection status, will sometimes just stop working, accepting data and returning nothing. Internet connectivity on the machine is not affected, including internet connectivity to the proxy server. Only the tunnel is failing. I use an Amazon US east host as my proxy, which has never had a problem before, and the problem appears from at least 4 different locations/internet providers.

This started happening right after my 10.5 -> 10.6 upgrade. I did a fresh install and copy/pasted Meerkat from one machine to the other; I'm using a 64-bit kernel.

Any ideas, or anything I should be looking at?

IDEA: Grouping connection

Posted in

I am using meerkat with some of my projects. Example for one project I need ~6 connections which i made with meerkat.

Ot whould great, what i can group connections, so i can inicialize them with one click. (One configured connection can belongs to many projects).

Easiest implementation is to use tags for connections (unlimited)

Any help would be appreciated.

10.7 Lion compatibility

Trying to save a tunnel with a port over a certain number gives me an error on 10.7. It didn't happen on 10.6, so I think Lion's to blame here.

How To Make Remote Firefly Server Available Locally?

Posted in

dear merkatters,

here's my problem:

i have a fileserver at my office
(a ReadyNasUltra 6 – basically a souped-up Debian Linux box).

A Firefly server is running on the ReadyNas.

When my Mac is connected to the same office network, iTunes "sees" the firefly server in the "shared" list and connects without problems.

To remotely access the firefly server (when my mac is NOT on the same network as the readyNas), I have created a meerkat tunnel (via my ssh account on the ReadyNas) as follows:

I want to reach: 127.0.0.1
Port: 3689
As if i were on: nasSSH [my ssh account on the ReadyNas]
WITH Make tunnel endpoint available to other computers
WITH Advertise over Bonjour on iTunes

The tunnelled firefly server appears in the iTunes SHARED list... but when i click on it and iTunes tries to connect, nothing happens - AND my network monitor does not detect ANY network traffic.

so there must be something wrong in the tunnel...

Any ideas on how to get this running?
Thanks in advance!
